Portable vs Fixed Air Compressors

There are two main types of air compressors available – portable and fixed. It can be a difficult decision for some people, but if you have all the information you need, it can be made quite easily. Here is a primer on both portable and fixed air compressors.

Portable air compressor
Most people choose to use a portable air compressor when they will be doing lots of work at mobile job sites or working around the house. You can pick up some pretty cheap portable air compressors and tools that will do a lot of important jobs around your house with relative ease. Some of the downsides to a portable air compressor, though, is the cost, and the fact that they are usually less powerful than their fixed air compressor counterparts. They still do a great job, but they have a different application and they are suited to different jobs than a fixed air compressor.

Fixed air compressor
When you choose a fixed air compressor, you can usually get more power than you would if you were to use a portable air compressor. They usually cost less for the amount of power they have, and they are more steadily built. One of the other benefits that people don’t think of when using a fixed air compressor is the ability to use hard lines for your workshop. For example, is you had an air compressor in your car shop, you would be able to use hard lines and put outlets all around your workshop, so you could plug in your tools in multiple locations. This would allow you to have shorter lines and the whole process would be a lot more efficient. This would cost a little bit more money to set up, but you would save lots of time and stress in the long run.

You really can’t go wrong with either a fixed or a portable air compressor. They both suit a wide variety of applications, and they both offer the power and efficiency you need. When making your decision, the best thing to do is consider the applications you will be using it for, and choose the one that suits those best.
