It didn’t look like this would be the case at the start of the season as Red Bull turned up in Bahrain with a super quick car that trounced on the rest of the pack in terms of raw pace. But they couldn’t capitalise on this speed advantage as reliability issues played havoc and we saw Fernando Alonso bring his Ferrari home for victory on his debut.

Surely this was just a blip though as we expected Red Bull to turn up to the next races and dominate. Volvo’s Sports Car – The P1800

Sportiness and safety do not always have to be mutually exclusive in the automotive and assurance auto industry. Volvo, famous for its safety features such as the early use of seat belts and crash one protection actually produced a sporty and stylish car in the 1960s. The P1800 entered the American market in 1963 as Volvo’s sporty car. Although there had been a sports car earlier the P1800 was the first real attempt to penetrate the world market for sporty cars. This all new design that incorporated parts from the Volvo lineup was a way to enter the market without expensive tooling for new engines and mechanical parts.

Although the P1800 was a true Volvo the company hedged its bets and had the body designed in Italy by Ghia. The classic design included small tailfins in the rear, extensive use of chrome on the body work and a low roofline that was aerodynamic and stylish. Early manufacturing took place at a production plant in England operated by Jensen Motor Car Company. The combination of Italian styling and British manufacturing made this a truly multi-national effort.

Volvo’s P1800 was notable for many reasons. The car was equipped with a 1.8 liter four cylinder engine that was manufactured to withstand hard use. The inclusion of five main crankshaft bearings was a first for a car of this price and level of manufacture. The car also included a four speed manual transmission with electronic overdrive.

By 1964 production was being moved to a plant in Sweden and the P1800 was known as the 1800S. This did not change the fact that the car was still a Swedish sports car with fairly conservative styling and performance. The car was never meant to be a true sports car but more a grand tourer with sporting tendencies.
